U of M / Government Fracking Study Commencing in Michigan

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder released an energy and environmental policy blueprint calling for increased production of Michigan’s natural gas.

University of Michigan researchers are going to work with government regulators to examine the environmental and societal effects of fracking.

Hydraulic Fracturing is a contentious issue especially with environmental groups. In hydraulic fracturing, large amounts of water, sand and chemicals are injected deep underground to break apart rock and free trapped natural gas.

The study will examine human health, the environment and ecology, economics, technology, public perception, law and policy, and geology/hydrodynamics.

The second phase of the project will outline approaches to shaping hydraulic fracturing policies and practices in Michigan.
