Train Slams into Truck in Vermilion, Ohio

Train truckAn eastbound Norfolk & Southern train slammed into a box truck at the crossing near Bulan’s Boatyard at Vermilion Road, Ohio, at about 11 a.m. on August 1.

The truck driver from Garfield Heights, Jacob Koenig, 27, suffered head injuries and was taken to a local hospital. He works for Harris Battery in Cleveland,

The truck was carrying industrial truck batteries. The collision caused the batteries to shower across the road due to which, multiple railroad crossings at Vermilion Road and Main, Adams and Grand streets had to be closed.

Crews from Vermilon-based SpillTek Environmental Services loaded the broken batteries into large plastic drums while the haz mat crews and the Ohio EPA official monitored the clearing activity and the. Linda Oros, an Ohio EPA spokeswoman said, “Basically, every battery was broken on impact…There was half a gallon to a gallon (of acid) in each battery.”

The train was re-routed through a nearby rail yard.

The accident is under investigation.
