Train Hit by Landslide in Switzerland; 11 Injured

TrainA mountain train was hit by a landslide in a deep valley between Tiefencastel and Solis, in Graubuenden, Switzerland, on August 13.

The accident happened after the train departed from the ski resort of St. Moritz and headed towards Chur, Graubuenden, with more than 140 people aboard.

Three carriages of train derailed after the accident; one of them slid off the tracks into a steep slope and was stopped by trees.

According to Graubuenden police spokesperson Anita Senti, 11 people were injured and were transported to nearby hospitals. Five of them are believed to in serious condition while the other 6 sustained minor injuries.

The Police officials also confirmed that the injured included 8 Swiss, 2 Japanese and 1 Australian.

The uninjured passengers were taken to Tiefencastel and put on buses to their respective destinations.

As the crash site was not accessible by road, helicopters with an air rescue service were also deployed for rescue operation.
