Train Crash In Poland Injures 58, Kills 16

What: one train Przemysl to Warsaw; 1 train Warsaw to Krakow (Regional Interregio)
Where: Szczekociny Poland
When: Mar 3 2012
Who: 16 people dead and 58 injured
Why: Two trains collided in Poland, killing sixteen passengers and injuring 55. Maintenance on the tracks may have had something to do with why one of the trains ( Warsaw to Krakow) was on the wrong track. Passengers had to be extricated from the mangled wreckage. One American woman was among the fatalities.

200+ emergency responders (450 firefighters, 100 police officers, 35 ambulances and two helicopters) arrived on the scene. The front two cars were the worst damaged. Initially public announcements were made that the drivers of both trains survived with injuries, but now reports are unclear if either survived.

The trains belong to PKP Intercity, and PKP Regional Services.

The family help line is 19 757 lub (42) 19 436.
