Papua New Guinea Bus Crash kills 24

A bus was on the way from Baiyer district to Mount Hagen in Papua New Guinea’s West Highlands to pick up a coffin. While on the way, the bus fell off a cliff, fifty meters to impact. There were 33 passengers in the 25-seat bus.

Initially, the dead were from Baiyer’s Epika tribe and include 17 men, 6 women and a 5 year old girl. The driver survived the impact and made it to Mt Hagen General Hospital but died there, bringing the death toll to 24.

Of the nine survivors, a man with a lacerated liver, and a woman with a ruptured spleen are the most seriously injured; they have both survived operations.

Reports say that the overworked driver was fatigued and may have fallen asleep at the wheel.
