NTSB Releases Preliminary Report on the Deadly Fedex Truck-Student Bus Crash

crashNTSB has released the preliminary investigation report on the recent road crash involving a FedEx truck and a chartered bus, which occurred on April 10 at Interstate 5 near Orland, CA. The bus was carrying 43 high school students, 2 drivers and 3 chaperones at the time of accident.

According to the NTSB report, the 2007 Volvo truck, carrying two 28-foot trailers, was on its way back to the FedEx facility in Sacramento. At about 5:40 p.m. it lost control, crossed a 58 feet wide grassy median and entered the northbound side of the freeway.

The out of control truck first rammed into the rear part of a 2013 Nissan Altima, which rotated and slid off the freeway. It then struck a bus chartered by the Los Angeles-area high school seniors, which was taking them back home after a visit to Humboldt State University.

The report further states that “A post-crash fire ensued…..The fire consumed the combination vehicle (FedEx truck) and partially burned the motorcoach.”

The report confirms that the accident resulted in 10 fatalities, including the drivers of truck and chartered bus, 5 high school seniors and 3 chaperones. The driver and the only passenger in the Nissan Altima suffered minor injuries.
