Mali riverboat capsized

A Mali riverboat capsized in the Niger river.

The boat was en route to Timbuctu. The boat sank around 8 p.m. between Mopti and Konna.

Only two hundred ten survivors have been found. Early reports said there were four hundred aboard, but the reported number of passengers fluctuates. Up to 160 are still missing.

Late Friday, passengers awoke to a loud noise, and the boat split in two. Malian rescue services were assisted by residents of Koubi and passing boaters.

The boat has been described as a “dugout.”
