Kenya bus hits Train

The white passenger bus was passing through train crossing in Nairobi when the train plowed through it on Oct. 30, 2013.

Eleven people died in the crash, according to Kenya’s Red Cross.

Kenya’s National Disaster Operation Centre said that hundreds of people who gathered at the scene assisted in helping the wounded and deceased. There is no indication if buses were provided for those on the train.

There were no safety measures set up at the crossing. Kenya Railways, the Ministry of Transport and Nairobi Metropolitan Ministry should be held responsible for the crash, according to Nairobi Senator Mike Mbuvi. He is planning to sue individual officers for criminal negligence.

“The contractor, Kenya Railways, officers from Nairobi Metropolitan, the resident engineer and officers from ministry of Transport all played a role in the negligence that eventually led to the unfortunate deaths. In other areas, Kenya Railways has erected barriers which automatically close the road to allow a train to pass. Why is the Mutindwa Crossing different?” He also wondered why contractors were paid, in spite of failing to erect required structures.
