Japanese Ski Bus Crashes, Killing 14, injuring 27


In the resort town of Karuizawa, people were sleeping on a bus when it crashed on the way to the Kita Shiga ski resort in Yamanouchi. The overnight bus was travelling from Tokyo to central Japan. Fourteen died; twenty-seven were injured. Passengers were between the ages of 18 to 32. The 65 year old driver and 57 year old alternate driver died at the scene. This is reported as the first Japanese bus accident since 1990 in which more than 10 people were killed. The bus strayed to the wrong side of the road and through a guardrail. The accident is under investigation. Investigators plan to investigate the bus operator and the Tokyo travel agency that organised the tour.The bus operating company has a record of drivers’ safety violations, most recently a few days ago. Thirty-nine passengers and two drivers were aboard at the time of the accident. Of those aboard, no one was uninjured.
