Deadly Bus Fire in Colombia Kills 33 Children

Bus burntAt least 33 children were burnt to death after the bus they were travelling in caught fire in Fundacion, Colombia on May 18.

Officials confirmed that the accident happened when the bus was taking the children back to their homes after they attended an event at a local Church.

The unfortunate accident killed 33 children, while around 24 other passengers, including an adult, are being treated for severe burns.

The Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos travelled to the northern Colombian municipality to offer his condolences to the families of victims. He said “The entire country is in mourning the death of these children.” He also announced that all the hospital and funeral expenses related to the accident will be borne by the government.

Police have arrested the bus driver, who initially fled after the accident. A local police spokesperson said, “The driver has been arrested, he turned himself in to authorities and we expect him to explain himself at a hearing this morning.”

The cause of accident is under investigation.
