Bus Fans Crash in Tome Chile

On February 9, 2013, a Trans O’Higgins bus carrying fans of the O’Higgins team was coming home from a winning game against Huachipato de Talcahuan and while crossing mountainous terrain in southern Chile near the town of Tome, fell five hundred feet into a ravine. Sixteen people aboard the bus died, most of whom were young men between the ages of 15-28. The one year old son of the driver was also killed in the crash. The driver was 38. There was also a 25 year old woman aboard. Twenty-two people were reported injured.

The Chinese made bus was built for 27 passengers and had no seat belts; officials are investigating the overcrowding, in addition to the crash.

Fans had chartered the small bus for the event.
