Bus Crashes in Mpumalanga, SA; 10 Burnt to Death

bus fireA Great North Transport bus, carrying commuters to Bushbuckridge, collided with an SUV truck on R40 road near White River in Mpumalanga, Johannesburg, South Africa, on the evening of June 4.

The bus bursted into flames after the collision. Ten people were burnt to death beyond recognition and 40 others sustained injuries of varied degrees. Only 17 passengers could escape before the blaze started.

The R40 was completely closed in both directions and traffic was diverted to Numbi Gate road.

Joseph Mabuza, a spokesman for the provincial department of community safety said that helicopter and ambulances were used to transport the victims to Rob Ferreira Hospital and MediClinic in Mbombela, as well as Themba Hospital in Kabokweni.

Preliminary reports indicate the truck driver, coming from Hazyview, lost control of the wheel and hit the bus, travelling from Mbombela.
