Blue Line Train Derails at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, Injures 32

ChicagoA commuter train derailment on Monday March 24th at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport injured 32 people.

As the Blue Line train arrived at the end of line at about 3 a.m, it flew off the rails, crashed into a concrete platform and finally rammed through an escalator. Luckily, the normally crowded area was largely empty at the time of accident.

According to Joseph Schwieterman, transportation specialist from DePaul University, “It is a miracle that nobody died. A train running up an escalator could have been a worst case scenario. When pedestrians are hit by a train, it is usually fatal.”

The train operator was injured in the accident along with 31 passengers.

The president of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 308, Robert Kelly told in a press conference that the operator was extremely tired at the time of accident. “I know she works a lot — as a lot of our members do… They gotta earn a living. She was extremely tired”.

National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of accident.
